  • Case 1: temperature is below 0°C at the surface and all levels above the surface (represented in the graphic above by white-colored pixels).
  • Case 2: temperature goes above and below 0°C two or more times through the atmosphere vertically and the surface temperature is less than 0°C. These regions are hatched with white but the underlying color represents the lowest freezing level (as shown by the blue arrow on the graphic - above-right).
  • Case 3: temperature goes above and below 0°C three or more times through the atmosphere vertically and the surface temperature is greater than 0°C. These areas are not highlighted but can be found by locating regions where adjacent pixels change by more than one color (when compared against the color scale), for example, the area near southern Louisiana in the graphic above.
  • Case 4: temperature at the surface is greater than 0°C. There is only one freezing level found at the indicated height.
